Wine-Dark Sea
10 May, 2026 | 7:00PM
Christ Church Calgary
3602 8th Street SW
Calgary, AB
Conductor GARETH JONES and the players of ALBERTA WINDS return to the stage for an evening of dramatic music that harnesses sound to evoke vivid images and emotions.
Wine-Dark Sea is a monumental, melodic full symphony inspired by one of humanity’s grandest myths, the story of Odysseus. Acclaimed as the hero who devised the plan to end 10 years of war, Odysseus sets sail for home—only to face a voyage more perilous than he could imagine.
American composer JOHN MACKEY tells this tale in thrilling cinematic style, driving the ensemble to its limits in this rare chance to hear a true masterwork for wind ensemble.

COSMIC HARMONIES
June 8, 2025 | 7:00PM
Christ Church Calgary
3602 8th Street SW
Calgary, AB
ALBERTA WINDS presents COSMIC HARMONIES with special guest Jillian Camwell, oboe soloist.
Calgary’s collection of committed woodwind, brass and percussion players returns to the stage with special guest, former Calgarian, noted international performer and Troy University assistant professor Jillian Camwell in the Canadian Premiere of COSMIC HARMONIES, one of the final works of legendary band composer Robert W. Smith. This concerto for oboe, written for and in consultation with Dr. Camwell, is inspired by the work of American artist “Nall” Hollis, a student of Dalí.
We are also proud to present A COLOUR SYMPHONY, the symphony #3 by British Composer Philip Sparke. Meant as a large scale work designed to show off the various timbres or tone colours available in the modern wind band, the music also is inspired by the neurological condition of Chromesthesia, where various musical sounds are experienced as visual colours.
Canadian TV/Media composer Michelle Lorimer wrote DAYBREAK, DRAWN TO THE FIRE as the great eclipse of 2024 was fascinating many in Ontario and the eastern part of the country. In its musical depiction of a second dawn of the sun in the middle of the day, Lorimer’s music looks to remind listeners of the ever present possibility of new life, and an optimistic vision of the future, even in the face of darkness.

INTERPLAY
February 2, 2025 | 7:00PM
Christ Church Calgary
3602 8th Street SW
Calgary, AB
INTERPLAY, featuring music for soloist and wind ensemble.
A wind ensemble is a group of individuals who work together to create a singular vision. This sometimes has the effect of obscuring the artistry of each performer. In this concert, Gareth Jones and the players of the Alberta Winds perform a program that puts a spotlight on the intriguing interplay between each person performing together. Solo performances on Flute, Saxophone and Trombone are the core of an evening spent showcasing this paradigm.
Soloist versus Ensemble—Cooperation versus conflict—background versus foreground: The intriguing balance between these elements underpins every great performance.
Directed by Gareth Jones.
Featuring Soloists:
Hilary Amante, Flute
Holly De Caigny, Saxophone
Dylan Martin, Trombone
Featuring music by:
Sally Lamb McCune
