INTERPLAY, featuring music for soloist and wind ensemble.

A wind ensemble is a group of individuals who work together to create a singular vision. This sometimes has the effect of obscuring the artistry of each performer. In this concert, Gareth Jones and the players of the Alberta Winds perform a program that puts a spotlight on the intriguing interplay between each person performing together.  Solo performances on Flute, Saxophone and Trombone are the core of an evening spent showcasing this paradigm.

Soloist versus Ensemble—Cooperation versus conflict—background versus foreground: The intriguing balance between these elements underpins every great performance.

Directed by Gareth Jones.

Featuring Soloists:

Hilary Amante, Flute
Holly De Caigny, Saxophone
Dylan Martin, Trombone

Featuring music by:

Sally Lamb McCune
Martin Ellerby
Claude T. Smith
Bert Appermont

COSMIC HARMONIES, featuring the first Canadian performance of this Oboe Concerto by Robert W. Smith. “Cosmic Harmonies” is one of the final works written by band composing legend Robert W. Smith—written for and in collaboration with former Calgarian, oboist Jillian Camwell.

Dr. Camwell, Assistant Professor of Oboe at Troy University, will be our special guest as we give the first performance in Canada of this work.

Humankind has been inspired by heavens and the world above since ancient times. “Cosmic Harmonies” is inspired by the art of Fred “Nall” Hollis, a student of Dali. As a note of interest, we performed Robert W. Smith’s other art inspired concerto, “Conversations with Matisse” in our Fall 2022 Concert.

In Music SOARS!, Alberta Winds presents a program of music that connects the metaphors of the sky with the power of art to connect people across times and places.
