The Ensemble
ALBERTA WINDS is the amalgamation of some of Calgary’s most dedicated wind, brass and percussion musicians, delivering captivating experiences that resonate with music lovers of all kinds. Our ensemble promotes live concert band music through high calibre performances of works by composers from around the world, introducing audiences to new Canadian music and featuring virtuosic soloists during their concert seasons. With a sizeable number of music educators in its membership, Alberta Winds has a tangible relationship with the school band community in Calgary and participates in impactful performances at festivals and events, including MusicFest Canada and the Vic Lewis International Band Festival in Canmore, AB.
Gareth Jones, Director
GARETH JONES’S musical activities are greatly varied. He has appeared as guest conductor and clinician with hundreds of ensembles across North America, including the National Youth Band of Canada, has been featured on Juno nominated blues recordings, appeared on CBC radio as a soloist and chamber musician, has been a guest lecturer with the National Youth Orchestra and an adjudicator at music festivals across Canada. He currently directs the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Brass Choir, and received the University of Calgary Teaching Excellence Award in 2018. He served as associate principal trumpet of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 1992-2007 and continues to perform with the CPO when his conducting schedule allows.
